Flickr, editr?

I just noticed something I find a little odd. Flickr reformats comments on a photo. I posted a comment to this photo, expressing my enthusiasm for the cookies pictured therein; a simple short all caps message. When the page reloaded to show me my posted comment, it had been changed to sentence case. Thanks guys, I do appreciate the protection from the people who have stuck-on capslock keys, but I do know better, and that was the point. See, it's funny because...oh, nevermind.

In The Shadow of No Towers

Reviewers of Art Spiegelman's new book In The Shadow of No Towers on Amazon complain of its thick, relatively few pages, its "Bush-bashing" (as though somehow criticizing the President were automatically a negative thing), and its general tendency to not be Maus. I found it to be really moving and beautifully rendered. You'll read through it in less than a half hour, but leave it on the coffee table--there's great stuff literally between the panels that's worth extra scrutiny.

The Weakerthans

All I had was my cameraphone, so this is more of an impression of the band on stage. Great band, great show, great guys.

Recent books

I want to start keeping track of the books I read. This post attempts to catch up with the list since July of this year.

Night on the beach

To someone like me who grew up firmly landlocked in the Midwest, the sea is still mysterious and kind of unreal. Nighttime on the beach is an amazing thing: so dark (the island we stayed on has a "lights out for turtles" rule, to protect hatching sea turtles as they make their way to the sea guided by the moonlight) and so quiet, except for the chorus of frogs that sang in the wet dunes.

Home.

I highly recommend that anyone in need of a vacation (or just something fun to do) spend a week at the beach. I realize that not everyone has the means to pay for a week's lodging near the beach, so at least spend a day at the beach or get a hotel a couple miles from the beach. It all works. The point is to spend multiple days in the sand and salty water. It's tremendously relaxing.

We managed to slip our vacation in right between two big tropical storms--T.S. Gaston and hurricane Frances. Driving down to Charleston we were surprised at how much rain and wind there was; when we finally stopped for a break, we got a paper and learned that we'd been driving through a tropical storm that had just got done ravaging Charleston and was now flooding central South Carolina. When we did arrive, nearly everything was closed or w/o power, water covered the roads, and trees were down all over. I'd never seen anything like it, it was pretty awesome, actually.
