The Weakerthans

9/24/04 @ Cats Cradle

All I had was my cameraphone, so this is more of an impression of the band on stage. Great band, great show, great guys.

Just one more drink and then I
Should be on my way home
I'm not entirely sure
What you're talking about
I had a really nice time
But my dogs need to be fed
I must say that in the right light
You look like Shackleton
Comment allez-vous ce soir?
Je suis comme ci comme ça
Yes a penguin taught me French
back in Antarctica

He's got an extraordinary gift for making common words and phrases remarkably evocative, eh?

Definitely; it's weird that I pulled that song out of my head, the one that could almost be considered a novelty number. There's some of the tracks on Left and Leaving that are just heartbreaking, and not because I know the city of Winnipeg.

But the airport's almost always empty this time of the year

So let's go play on the baggage carousel

We'll set our watches forward like we're just arriving here

From a past we left in a place we knew too well

Also

The city's still breathing but barely, it's true

Through buildings gone missing like teeth

The man makes me sick with jealousy with these words he uses, and I love it.

Not to mention from the last song mentioned the simple question, "who's left and who's leaving?" Quite possibly one of the saddest fucking questions ever to have to cross your mind when "memories rust and erode into lists." Dammit.
